What does it look like to follow Jesus?
Jesus tells us that we are his disciples. A disciple is a learner of Jesus. We are to be life-long learners of Jesus. What does a learner do? A learner learns. But not just fills their head with knowledge. A learner learns so that they will become something.
Some of Jesus’ last words tells us about what a learner is. Jesus says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
There is a lot in these verses but for our time today I just want to focus on being a disciple. We are called to make and be disciples. And disciples OBEY. Jesus says “teaching them to observe all I have commanded you.” As I mentioned disciples are to learn, they are to be taught. But its not just so you pass a test. Discipleship is so that we would observe or OBEY what Jesus said.
Why obey? Because obedience comes from love. You want to be like those you love. You imitate those you love. Anyone can gain head knowledge. A disciple seeks to obey and become like their master. Following Jesus means we want to be more and more like him. His close relationship to the Father, his compassion to others, his steadfastness in hard times, his love for the lowly. This is what Jesus did, and if we want to follow Him, we are to obey.
